Periodontology , or periodontics (peri: around, Dental: tooth) is the science that studies and treats diseases of the system implementation and support of the teeth. This unit is composed of the alveolar bone, periodontal ligament and cementum. Pathological changes of the periodontium are called periodontal disease, such as plaque, gingivitis, periodontitis.
The function of the periodontium is the insertion of the tooth to the bone of the jaw and keep the surface of the mucosa masticatory cavity mouth. This is also called periodontal attachment apparatus or tissue holder tooth and establishes a functional unit biological and evolutionary changes that suffers with age and with respect to changes in the oral
